Franche-Comté |
Once part
of the domaine of the Grand Dukes of Burgundy, Franche-Comté (or
the Jura, as it is often known) has none of the prosperity of neighbouring
Burgundy. It is a quiet, unspoiled region of mountains, forests, farmland,
lakes, and fast-flowing rivers. The Jura mountains, at their highest in
the east near Geneva, shelve dramatically down to Burgundy in the west
of the region. The high plateaux provide ideal conditions for cross-country
skiing in winter, and mountain-biking and hiking in summer. The capital
of the region is the ancient town of Besançon, which lies within
a loop of the River Doubs. The only large town of the region, it merits
a visit for its citadel, cathedral, and fine-arts museum. |

Baume les Messieurs (15 km) |
||||
(Franche Comté
- Jura) Magnificent natural site with an impressive blind valley, an ancient
glacial amphitheatre, caves containing successive caverns and an underground
lake. 6th century abbey founded by Saint Columbine. |
||||
Royal Salt Works of Arc-et-Senans (40 km) |
||||
The Royal Salt Works (Saline
Royale) was built by visionary architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux between
1774 and 1779 to process the salt mined nearby at Salins-les-Bains. Intended
as a Utopian model town, the complex, although never completed, was designed
to provide housing, workshops, and offices. With the grand director's
mansion at the centre, flanked by two evaporation workshops, and with
most of the eleven other buildings arranged in a semicircle around it,
the Salt Works remains one of the architectural curiosities of France. |
||||
Salins les Bains (40 km) |
||||
Salins was, since the Middle Ages, the first industrial city of the Franche-Comté. Its salt-works, closed since 1962, are today one of the most beautiful and one of the most interesting museum of Franche-Comté. The underground waters, ten times salty than the sea water, are used in the spa for different cares. |
||||
Les Cascades du Hérisson
(10 km) |
||||
They are located near the village of Doucier
in the heart of the "Region des Lacs" (Region of lakes). Source
of the Hérisson river is in the lake of Bonlieu at altitude of
805 m (2641 ft). It drops down to the Doucier plateau covering 280 m (920
ft) of altitude difference in only 3 km (2 miles) by cutting through narrow
gorges and forming spectacular waterfalls of : The "Eventail"( name éventail derives
from its fan shape), a 65 m (213 ft) drop in leaps and bounds, forming
a pyramid of foaming water. The "Grand Saut" water falls from a height of
60 m (200 ft) in a single waterfall. The "Saut du Moulin" and "Saut Girard".
The sites are easy to access and the trails along the
Herisson river are well maintained.
